CHAPTER XI

“Is Courtney usually this nervous?” Ben asked Parker on the phone.

“No,” his friend replied. “Not at all.”

It was almost ten o’clock, and Ben was tired, which he attributed to some leftover jet lag and a weekend of lost sleep replaced by fabulous sex.

Parker had called after he’d been channel surfing for a few minutes. “I wanted to check on you,” his friend said. “Courtney’s really concerned about your safety. She texted that a car almost hit you.”

“The police said it was an accident,” Ben told his friend.

“She’s worried about you based on your past life together,” Parker said.

“She shouldn’t worry,” Ben reiterated. “I don’t even know for sure if we did have a past life together.” Although he didn’t find it that difficult to believe.

“Oh, I’m pretty certain you did,” Parker said. “Her memories and regressions are too vivid to be coincidences. And you know we’ve seen all kinds of things here.”

“True. And I believe in them. But that doesn’t automatically mean those events carried over to this life.” Ben leaned back in his comfy sofa.

“But you two are together again, maybe for a reason,” his friend said.

“Maybe.” Ben drummed his fingers on the table beside him. It was hard to believe someone was trying to injure him, or worse. “The police said it was probably a careless driver. Accidents do happen.”

“True, but I want you to be very careful from now on,” Parker said. “Not just for Courtney. All your friends care too.”

Parker continued, “and if she gives us permission, I’ll show you the video of her regression. It will give you chills.”

“Why?”

“It’s so obvious that she’s seeing and describing a scene which is horrible—the death of her sweetheart.”

Ben was curious. “I would like to see it. I’ll ask her myself.”

“Alright, bro,” Parker said. “I’ll let you get some rest. Between your trip and this—incident—you must be fatigued.”

“Yes, I’m about to go to sleep,” Ben said.

“Bye. Take care of yourself.”

“I will,” he promised. “Bye.”

After clicking off, Ben gave up on the TV. But he didn’t stop thinking about Courtney’s fears. Was it possible he was in danger? He was reluctant to believe it.

He asked silently if he was in danger, hoping to hear one of the familiar voices he’d heard before. But they were silent tonight. Damn. Just when he needed advice, the voices weren’t speaking to him. He really did want to hear his grandmother or Talking Owl, the Indian spirit.

Searching for those voices made him remember that they hadn’t spoken when Ann had practically stalked him, tracking him down and trying to make him believe it was pure coincidence or fate that had brought them together. He grit his teeth. Why hadn’t they warned him that Ann was even more traitorous than Ruth, his old college girlfriend? Was Courtney manipulating him the same way? Really, how well did he know her?

The answer was, he didn’t. Could Courtney be trusted? It would be unethical if she used her knowledge of him from TLC to learn all about him then track him down and make it seem like it was pure coincidence.
